If you missed one of the hottest events of the year, let’s bring you up to speed
Things are heating up in preparation for South Africa’s very first version of Project Runway, brought to you by Mzansi Magic and Ndalo Pictures, in association with 4th Street Wine and production partner Rapid Blue.
Last week Friday May 4 at the Palazzo’s Rosa in Montecasino, Johannesburg, we held our exclusive reveal event to formally announce our resident judges for the season, top fashion PR specialist Noni Gasa and Row-G founder Rahim Rawjee, as well as mentor Gert-Johan Coetzee and our 12 talented and inspired contestants, introduced by Elle SA editor-in-chief Kelly Fung.
The excitement was palpable as select media and influencers got to mingle with our judges, mentor and contestants and work the room, while sipping on 4th Street Wine.
So, what will Noni be looking for from the contestants this season? “Originality, wearability, commercial appeal and uncompromising quality,” she says. “Technical skill is important, of course, and so is having a sense of identity – knowing what you stand for and having a point of view. The most successful brands are firmly positioned in their purpose and craft a signature aesthetic that’s instantly recognised by the customer.”
And Rahim? “In Project Runway, it’s more about the interpretation, or the use of fabrics in a specific design. I’m more interested in what you choose to do with the cloth rather than the cloth itself,” he says.
Ndalo Pictures founder and CEO Khanyi Dhlomo says, “Noni and Rahim are the ultimate dream team for Project Runway SA. They are both highly accomplished, incredibly engaging, and their chemistry absolutely sizzles.”
Look out for the premiere episode of Project Runway SA season 1 in July, coming to Mzansi Magic, channel 161 on DStv.
