Meet the Designer
Q & A
Where are you from and what informs your approach to design?
I am from Pretoria North. Drama, glitz and glam – over the top – inform my designs. Life is too short for boring clothes. My approach to design is definitely “more is more”.
Why did you decide to enter Project Runway South Africa?
I wanted a Lexus (laughs). Besides that, I want to elevate my design career to an international level of exposure and experience.
What did you wear to the casting session?
I was feeling fat that day, so I went in all black (laughs) – black jeans and a T-shirt.
Where do you think fashion is at the moment?
In a very minimalist, crisp, architectural place. But the time for fun, flirty, club-kids glam will be back. That is the beauty of fashion!
What makes your designs unique?
I don’t design for the shrinking violet. I will always design with a big, bright, sexy rose in mind – men and women who steal the attention in a room.
Who encouraged and supported your design journey?
My mom. She is my biggest supporter. Her love for me is something I don’t celebrate much, but through it all she is my constant rock. Through every disappointment and celebration, mommy is there.
Which designer’s work resonates the most with you right now?
Catch Siphosihle Masango in action when Project Runway South Africa airs in July 2018 on Mzansi Magic, channel 161 on DStv.
