Meet the Designer
Q & A
Tell us about the moment you knew that you wanted to become a designer?
It all happened so quickly. My mom studied fashion design, but never pursued a career in it. She influenced my fashion sense over the years and I always strived to make myself the most fashionable clothing. Then one day, a friend suggested that I make her something…
What was the first garment you ever made?
A couture – well, I thought it was couture – gown for a friend for the Vodacom Durban July.
What do you do to stay inspired?
I constantly connect with people and talk about their expectations of fashion. I try to keep up with current trends and fashion icons, as well as my surroundings and situations.
What excites you about South African fashion?
We are such a diverse country with so many different ethnicities and cultures, which influence the colourful and vibrant industry. In a way, we celebrate our democracy and freedom through our fashion.
What do you think makes you stand out from the other finalists?
I am self-taught and my approach is totally different from everyone else. I also have a degree in architecture and am currently completing my masters, which influences my designs.
What makes your designs unique?
Attention to detail, using my architectural background and understanding the human form and proportion.
What are you hoping to achieve as one of the Project Runway South Africa finalists?
I want to show South Africa and the world my capabilities and my interpretation of fashion. I want to express myself through my fashion and am hoping to build the Kireshen Chetty brand.
Who is your style icon and why?
My mum. She has such impeccable taste, which influenced me. She’d always dress in the most current trends and was not afraid to push fashion boundaries.
